The MRFF 2024 National Critical Research Infrastructure Initiative is investing in research infrastructure to ensure Australian researchers can develop innovative solutions to complex health challenges. This program provides funding for projects that address unmet medical needs by enhancing research infrastructure in key areas such as digital health technologies, medical research enablers, co-investment partnerships, and mRNA development.

Eligible organisations can apply under one of four funding streams.

Funding Streams

  • Stream 1 – Innovation enablers: Supports the development and expansion of biobanks, tissue repositories, research platforms, and secure health data environments to advance medical research.
  • Stream 2 – Digitisation of health care: Funds AI-enabled health interventions, digital therapeutics, and wearable technology integration into clinical practice.
  • Stream 3 – Co-investment partnerships: Provides funding for significant research infrastructure facilities, personnel, and equipment, requiring co-investment from research organisations, industry, and government.
  • Stream 4 – mRNA technology enablers: Supports the development of mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutics by enhancing emerging mRNA technologies and research infrastructure.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be an Australian-based organisation capable of supporting innovative medical research projects.
  • Meet the specific eligibility requirements for the selected funding stream.
  • If applying under Stream 3, be part of a consortium that includes at least one academic institution and another organisation (industry or government), with at least 34% co-investment in cash.
